The Journey of Pizza Pi: From a Dream to a Floating Pizzeria
Pizza Pi’s story began in 1996 when a daring British family commissioned the construction of a 37-foot aluminum-hulled boat named Pagan. They sailed the 37-foot vessel across the Atlantic Ocean, eventually reaching Antigua and Barbuda. Unfortunately, a dispute ended their journey, and the boat was left on land, untouched and deteriorating for a decade.
After ten years, Pagan was restored and equipped with a new engine, making the voyage to the British Virgin Islands. Here, Tara and Sasha, the founders of Pizza Pi, discovered the vessel and immediately envisioned it as the perfect floating pizzeria. By June 2012, they had become the proud new owners of Pagan.
Tara and Sasha spent the next two years at the boatyard in Nanny Cay on Tortola, BVI, transforming the interior into a fully functional pizzeria. The boat was outfitted with three ovens, two fridges, a freshwater maker, a freezer, a pizza prep station, a small bar, a bathroom, and a cabin now used for storing provisions and Pizza Pi merchandise.
Renamed Pi, the boat was relaunched and sailed to St. Thomas. From its mooring in Christmas Cove, Pizza Pi officially opened in November 2014, quickly becoming known for serving the best pizza in the Caribbean.
The founders sold the business in 2018 and briefly changed hands again in 2022. In May 2023, a local maritime business owner and his girlfriend took on the task, aiming to make Pizza Pi a destination rather than just a quick stop.
The current owners, Chris and Katie, are dedicated to maintaining a family-friendly maritime dining experience that captures the funky, unique vibe of the islands. They want guests to fully enjoy the beauty of Christmas Cove and the overall Pizza Pi experience.
Previously, hungry boaters would quickly raft up or use the dinghy drive-thru to grab their fresh-baked pizza before heading on their way. These options are still available, but guests can now enjoy new floating lounges.
Visitors can sip a drink with their feet in the water, swim, and dive into a slice of mouthwatering paradise while floating alongside Pizza Pi with family and friends, old and new.
You can still expect the best pizza in the Caribbean, now made with fresher ingredients (sourced locally whenever possible), a drink menu featuring island-inspired cocktails and frozen drinks, and an enhanced venue to enjoy it all.
